GL Inet E750 V2 (Mudi), Tailscale and updates

GL Inet’s Portable Devices: A Versatile Choice

GL Inet offers a range of portable devices, ideal for various needs, from on-the-go connectivity to home networking. These devices are known for their sleek design, user-friendly web interface, and reliable support. A key advantage is their reliance on OpenWRT Linux, which ensures regular updates based on the OS’s release cycle.

Addressing Tailscale security Issues with OpenWRT

While GL Inet’s Mudi device doesn’t officially support Tailscale due to hardware limitations, you can still install it (through the Plug-ins menu). However, the offered version has a security issue (see here). A community member have found workarounds. Aaron (Admon) developed an updater script to address a critical security issue in the Tailscale binaries. However, this script might not be universally effective (on Mudi, it gives an error: “Illegal Instruction”).

A DIY Solution for Tailscale on Mudi

For users encountering issues with the script, a more direct approach involves manually installing Tailscale binaries. By downloading the appropriate MIPS binary from Tailscale’s official repository and copying it to the device’s system directories, you can enable Tailscale functionality.

Conclusion

GL Inet’s portable devices, coupled with community-driven solutions, offer a flexible and adaptable networking experience. Thanks to the efforts of Aaron (for the amazing updater script!) and Tailscale’s comprehensive binary support, users can now enjoy the benefits of Tailscale with the latest security updates of this product.
